Review
The1Ds III is a powerful digital SLR from the genius folks at Canon. Packing a whopping21 megapixels in their CMOS sensor, the 1Ds III shoots its images on a full frame sensor measuring 36mm x 24mm.
Along with it’s high resolution sensor, the 1Ds III allows you to shoot at 5 frames per second or up to12 consecutive RAW or 56 jpeg images, this thanks to 2 DIGIC image processors. Cameras that sport a high megapixel count also suffer from noise issues especially when shooting at low light levels. This is not the case with the 1Ds III, Canon’s CMOS larger sensor allows you to shoot with superior results in all light levels with ISO ranging from 50 to 3200. View your images instantly on a generously sized 3″, 230,000 pixel LCD screen that also has a Live View, or real time view, function setting yourself free from only composing your shot using the view finder. A larger view finder allows you to see your work instantly with more accuracy, confirm your settings, as well save yourself from eye straining.
Canon has tested the shutter life of the 1Ds III to 300,000 compared to 100,000 on some of its lower end models allowing for a lengthy life. The 1Ds III also features an impressive moisture and dust resistant seal incorporated in its magnesium alloy shell, sealing all joints and seams as well as the doors housing the battery and memory cards. Also built in this beefy camera is the Canon EOS integrated cleaning system which automatically cleans
the sensor from dust and other small debris. This system will aide those photographers who constantly change lenses or work in dusty or windy environments. This system is utilized each time the camera is powered on and off.
Although the 1Ds III does not have an on-board flash, a hot shoe was included, allowing you to use many of the fine external flashes that Canon makes. Of course, don’t forget that the 1Ds III’s low light capturing with its ISO range is quite remarkable.
Another handy feature in the 1Ds III is the inclusion of 2, yes you heard right, 2 memory card slots. Never worry again about filling up your memory card out in the field and missing THE shot. One slot houses a Compact Flash card while
the other houses a SD both with USB 2.0 high speed connectivity of your data transfer.
The 1Ds III incorporates its Picture Style technology where the user can choose from 6 different presets as well as create up to 3 custom settings. These presets include Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, and Monochrome.
Focusing with the 1Ds III is beautifully fast featuring 45 Auto Focus points, 19 of which are high precision cross type and the remaining 26 serving as Assist point. These Auto Focus points can either be selected by the 1Ds III or by the user.
One of the coolest features of the 1Ds III is the ability to wirelessly transfer your photos as you shoot them to a computer as well as controlling many of the 1Ds III functions wirelessly with a couple strokes of the computer keys. This wireless connectivity is all possible with the optional WFT-E2A transmitter.
The 1Ds III is a remarkable piece of machinery. Given the numerous functions and capabilities housed in its magnesium alloy body, the 1Ds III weighs in at 40.7 oz, almost 3 pounds. While some users may find this rather bulky and heavy especially for those jumping onto the DSLR wagon, the 1Ds III feels solid and gives the user the feel of control especially for the veteran SLR users.
